sandy has affected us in delaware compared to our neighbors to the north. we are doing okay. this sandy didn't spare delaware and we have produced beyond our state's ability to provide. from the moment it is clear we are in the storm's path, i've been grateful for the work of governor jack martel and his entire team. state, county, local officials, first responders, american red cross, national guard, many volunteers are hoped to protect the residents as it approached and well after it passed. president obama, fema, the rest of the administration's team working hand in glove with their state team. in this case there was really a team. as i like to say there is no i in the word team. i should have the army corps of engineers has been particular in responding to hurricane sandy. over the years, funded by a series of storm protection projects in maryland are polite, robust and strong, healthy systems. these types of projects criticized at the time by some on my opinion because they performed exceptionally well during sandy black hundreds of millions, maybe billions of dollars in damage. as

michael kehoe and captain joe rios arrived at sandy hook elementary within minutes of the call. >> we needed to break into the school to get in because the back doors are secured. >> reporter: how did you get it open? >> broke out the window. >> reporter: it was quiet, and the halls were empty. chief kehoe searched sandy hook elementary room by room. >> with the rooms locked, that means the teachers had done their job, locked their doors and hid their children from danger. so we went around the building to the front of the building. >> reporter: tell me about that. >> there was a very tragic observation on all parts because then you could see the carnage that was present. >> reporter: when you saw what was in that classroom, what went through your mind? >> i was devastated, absolutely devastated. i had no words. i felt a little bit of anger towards the person who had done this. >> reporter: did you think there was anyone there to save? >> no. >> reporter: as a first responder, how do you deal with that? >> well, you feel a sense of guilt that you weren't there quick enough to do that.

in newtown, connecticut. it all started when a gunman entered through the doors of sandy hook elementary school. we are awaiting a press conference, you're looking at that right now. it has not begun, but i do want to give those of you who have joined us a sense of what happened. tom foreman walks us through what happened yesterday morning minute by minute. >> this is what we know at this point about the timeline of the shooting reported by law enforcement officials and witnesses and the layout of the school as best we can piece it all together. 9:30 in the morning, classes had been underway for a half hour. more than 600 students and approximately 50 faculty members inside the building. in addition to that there's a meeting just convened by some of the school officials including the principal in a room somewhere right up here, about seven of them all gathered in one room. about 9:40, ten minutes later, as beck we can make it out, that's when the gunman appears to have entered the building. how? we don't know. they had a new security system right up here that might have kept him out, not

. or is there no market for it. a faded media interest of hurricane sandy despite the fact that there are those reeling because of hurricane sandy. it's november 30, 2012 and our planet is in jeopardy i. if you haven't heard about it today. don't worry, it will be the same story tomorrow 31 [ ♪ music ♪ ] >> jennifer: many people think that climate change only threatens the future and won't effect them. try telling that to the victims of super storm sandy. it's been over a month since sandy slammed the east coast and killed 120 people in the u.s. and caused billions of dollars of damage. unless you live in one of the affected areas you probably think things are back to norm. but that's because the media is barely cleaning up the cleanup efforts. in new york city, they're living in third world conditions, raw sewage continues to flow into water ways. thousands still have no power and direct subway service is not expected to return into the middle of next year. >> we were up to five feet of water. it was not water but it was all cesspool so it was sewage water. >> how much can a body tank. >> blankets

at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues and a military vest." the principal of

're slated to begin work on a bill offering additional funding for victims of hurricane sandy that would provide an additional $9.7 billion in borrowing authority for the national flood insurance program which is now capped at $20.7 billion. it would also provide the requested $11.5 billion for the fema disaster relief fund, and it also includes some mitigation measures for future disasters. also we expect later debate today on a couple of judicial nominations. earlier this afternoon south carolina governor nikki haley announced she's selected freshman congressman tim scott to fill the seat being vacated by senate jim demint. senator demint leaving to become the president to have heritage foundation, and we'll take a look at what governor haley had to say now. , it is an elementary school, sandy hook elementary school, newtown, connecticut. the developments continue to come in, and there's a news conference scheduled for 1:00 eastern time this afternoon. with that, i'm going to hand off the baton to my colleague suzanne malveaux to continue the coverage. suzanne. >> thank you very much. welcome to cnn newsroom and welcome to our viewers around the world as they simultaneous cast this domestically and internationally. we were breaking news out of connecticut. we're following this school shooting. police told us a number of people have been shot at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, about 60 miles north of new york. first calls coming into police around 9:40 local time this morning. children were being evacuated, the schools in the area all on lockdown. now, we have learned that the shooter is dead. we are also hearing multiple local reports of fatalities. i want to go to our cnn's jason carroll for the very latest. first of all, outline if you will how many people we know are dead, who has been killed, and who has been injured. >> well, fi

caused the gunman to snap and go on the shooting rampage in sandy hook elementary school. peter doocy joins us with the exclusive. >> good morning, gretchen, adam lanza may are killed because he was mad at his mom for wanting to have him committed. that is it according to a hoo reason who took fox nuse.com, that adam believed that nancy loved the school where she was volunteering more than him and what i was told adam was aware of her participating the court for conservatorship and her plan to have him committed. high was upset and he thought she wanted to send him away. he was really, really angry. the new york post reported that adam lived in his mom's windowless basement with posters covered by posters of gunce. he would play videos. it was a game called the first person shooter game. police didn't find psychiatric drugs in the lanza house and the medical examiner hased a geneist to figure out if there was a trait that could have led adam lanza to mass murder here. here in connecticut there will be funeral for the victims and one of the teachers killed. >> brian: it is interesting

. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us what happened. walk us through what you saw and what you heard. >> well, i had a call from one of the teacher
